We show that if a complex system of aggregated choice respects a mutual knowledge structure, then the prospects of a stable collective outcome are considerably improved. Our domain-independent results apply to collective choice ranging from perception, where an interpretation of sense data is made by a collection of perceptual modules, to social choice, where a group decision is made from a set of preferences held by individuals. <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219525998000156","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2003,10,10]],"date-time":"2003-10-10T09:59:05Z","timestamp":1065779945000},"page":"221-236","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Collective Choice and Mutual Knowledge Structures"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"01","author":[{"given":"Diana","family":"Richards","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Political Science, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Brendan D.","family":"McKay","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Australian National University, Canberra, ACT, 0200, Australia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Whitman A.","family":"Richards","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Media Arts and Sciences and Department of Brain and Cognitive Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,4,5]]},"container-title":["Advances in Complex Systems"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1142\/S0219525998000156","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2019,8,7]],"date-time":"2019-08-07T11:22:19Z","timestamp":1565176939000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.worldscientific.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1142\/S0219525998000156"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1998,6]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"02n03","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,4,5]]},"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1998,6]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1142\/S0219525998000156"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1142\/s0219525998000156","relation":{},"ISSN":["0219-5259","1793-6802"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0219-5259","type":"print"},{"value":"1793-6802","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1998,6]]}}}
