In this paper, we discuss, from a linguistic and a conversation theoretic point of view, how nonverbal behaviors in conversations work. We look particularly at gaze and head movements. These play a variety of functions in face-to-face interactions. We show how these functions are structured by general principles governing cooperative actions and symbolic communication.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219843606000746","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,10,19]],"date-time":"2006-10-19T10:24:43Z","timestamp":1161253483000},"page":"241-267","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":62,"title":["HEAD GESTURES, GAZE AND THE PRINCIPLES OF CONVERSATIONAL STRUCTURE"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"03","author":[{"given":"DIRK","family":"HEYLEN","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Human Media Interaction, University of Twente, The Netherlands"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"219","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11,20]]},"reference":[{"key":"rf1","volume-title":"Face-to-Face Interaction","author":"Duncan S.","year":"1977"},{"key":"rf2","volume-title":"Relational Agents: Effecting Change through Human-Computer Relationships","author":"Bickmore T.","year":"2003"},{"key":"rf3","volume-title":"Natural, Intelligent and Effective Interaction with Multimodal Dialogue Systems","author":"Bickmore T.","year":"2005"},{"key":"rf5","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-3-540-24842-2_27"},{"key":"rf6","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1023\/A:1020913109256"},{"key":"rf8","volume-title":"Social Interaction","author":"Argyle M.","year":"1969"},{"key":"rf9","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1017\/CBO9780511620539"},{"key":"rf11","volume-title":"Kinesics and Context \u2014 Essays on Body Motion Communication","author":"Birdwhistle R.","year":"1970"},{"key":"rf12","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1002\/cav.5"},{"key":"rf14","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/0167-9457(83)90004-0"},{"key":"rf17","volume-title":"Telling Lies","author":"Ekman P.","year":"2001"},{"key":"rf18","volume-title":"Gaze and Mutual Gaze","author":"Argyle M.","year":"1976"},{"key":"rf19","first-page":"32","volume":"7","author":"Argyle M.","journal-title":"Semiotica"},{"key":"rf20","unstructured":"F.
