Our aim was to achieve socially meaningful and engaging interactions with children in the 8\u201312 age group to enable an exploration of bullying and coping strategies. We consider the engagement between the interacting partners, focusing particularly on the affective and empathic aspects of this relationship. We have used Theory of Mind methods to enable us to evaluate children's understanding of social scenarios and the thinking of others. The results from this 345 children study highlight that children are able to recognize and interpret affect in synthetic characters and are empathically engaged with the characters in the scenarios.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1142\/s0219843606000734","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,10,19]],"date-time":"2006-10-19T10:24:43Z","timestamp":1161253483000},"page":"351-370","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["USING THEORY OF MIND METHODS TO INVESTIGATE EMPATHIC ENGAGEMENT WITH SYNTHETIC CHARACTERS"],"prefix":"10.1142","volume":"03","author":[{"given":"LYNNE","family":"HALL","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing and Technology, University of Sunderland, Sunderland, SR6 0DD, UK"}]},{"given":"SARAH","family":"WOODS","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Adaptive Systems Research Group, University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield, Herts, AL10 9AB, UK"}]},{"given":"RUTH","family":"AYLETT","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mathematics and Computer Science, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, EH14 4AS, UK"}]},{"given":"ANA","family":"PAIVA","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"INESC-ID and IST, Av.
