In the multi-proxy effort to reconstruct ancient climates, a critical role can be played by palaeoclimatic evidence provided by the spatial and temporal distribution of temperature-sensitive marine molluscs. Shallow-water strata of the Mejillones Peninsula, northern Chile (23\u00b0S), contain dense faunal assemblages in which molluscs exclusive to, or characteristic of, Pliocene deposits (\n            <jats:italic>Chlamys simpsoni<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Chlamys vidali<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Chorus blainvillei<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Concholepas nodosa<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Fusinus remondi<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Herminespina mirabilis<\/jats:italic>\n            ) coexist with surprisingly abundant and varied populations of extant warm-water species (\n            <jats:italic>Bulla punctulata<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Cerithium stercusmuscarum<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Olivella<\/jats:italic>\n            sp.,\n            <jats:italic>Turbo<\/jats:italic>\n            cf.\n            <jats:italic>fluctuosus<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Anomia peruviana<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Argopecten ventricosus<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Donax peruvianus<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Dosinia ponderosa<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Mexicardia procera<\/jats:italic>\n            ,\n            <jats:italic>Undulostrea megodon<\/jats:italic>\n            ), most of which have their current southern zoogeographical limit at 6\u00b0S. These tropical elements are reliable indicators of nearshore marine conditions and their abundant occurrence implies that sea surface temperatures (SST) along the northern Chile coast were at least 2 \u00b0C warmer in the mid-Pliocene than at present, and that these very different conditions lasted long enough to allow stable colonization of the area.
