This experimental study explores the preservational effects brought about by the passive movement of dead macro-organisms upon a pre-established marine microbial mat under laboratory conditions. This demonstrates the potential for making multiple impressions of body tissues on the surface of microbial mats by means of passive transport alone. This throws doubt on the evidence for active feeding in Ediacaran fossils such as
Dickinsonia
and
Yorgia
.
</jats:p>
<jats:sec>
Supplementary material:
<jats:p>
Methods are available at
http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/SUP18375
.
</jats:p>
</jats:sec>
[[2009,10,28
["Smothering of microbial mats by macrobiota: implications for the Ediacara biota
[[2009,10,28
Ediacaran fossils from the Precambrian (Charnian Supergroup) of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, England
Boynton H.E., Ford T.D.Ediacaran fossils from the Precambrian (Charnian Supergroup) of Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, EnglandMercian Geologist199513165182
Gehling J.G.The case for Ediacaran fossil roots to the metazoan treeMemoirs of the Geological Society of India199120181224
Gehling J.G., Vickers-Rich P., Komarower P.Fleshing out the Ediacaran PeriodThe Rise and Fall of the Ediacaran Biota2007286LondonGeological Society425428Special Publications
Evolving Form and Function: Fossils and Development;
