Two previous studies reported\n            <jats:sup>40<\/jats:sup>\n            Ar\/\n            <jats:sup>39<\/jats:sup>\n            Ar data for S\u00e4\u00e4ksj\u00e4rvi and suggested conflicting formation ages of \u2264330\u2005Ma or\n            <jats:italic>c.<\/jats:italic>\n            560\u2005Ma. The former age represents a possible complication for models which indicate that the region was covered by sediments of the Caledonian foreland basin throughout much of the Phanerozoic. We conducted a study combining imaging, microstructural analysis and U\u2013Pb dating of shocked zircon from S\u00e4\u00e4ksj\u00e4rvi. The U\u2013Pb dataset indicates a\n            <jats:italic>c.<\/jats:italic>\n            600\u2005Ma impact into predominantly\n            <jats:italic>c.<\/jats:italic>\n            1850\u2005Ma target rocks. A concordia age of 608\u2009\u00b1\u20098\u2005Ma (2\n            <jats:italic>\u03c3<\/jats:italic>\n            ) confirms S\u00e4\u00e4ksj\u00e4rvi as the first known Ediacaran impact structure in the Baltic Shield and only the second worldwide. Our data indicate that the S\u00e4\u00e4ksj\u00e4rvi impact structure formed in exposed crystalline basement rocks of the Baltic Shield prior to the development of the Caledonian foreland basin.
