Our previous studies of the igneous rocks here have shown that the primitive oceanic and continental igneous rocks are coeval and belong to a marginal basin that opened and closed over 50\u2005Myr. A structural study and four new U\u2013Pb SHRIMP ages and zircon Hf\u2013O determinations allowed the identification of three metamorphic episodes, the first one of which, M\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            (D\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            -S\n            <jats:sub>1<\/jats:sub>\n            ), is coeval with Andean-type granite intrusion in the foreland (405\u2013380\u2005Ma). This activity was simultaneous with the development of an oceanic ridge and a marginal basin, at the outer edge of which a primitive granitic oceanic arc formed (380\u2013385\u2005Ma; zircon\n            <jats:inline-formula>\n              <mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" overflow=\"scroll\">\n                <mml:mi>\u03b4<\/mml:mi>\n              <\/mml:math>\n            <\/jats:inline-formula>\n            <jats:sup>18<\/jats:sup>\n            O 3.6\u20135.2\u2030). The extinction of this ridge initiated under-thrusting of the oceanic crust below the continent and an important mid- to high-grade metamorphic event, M\n            <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n            (D\n            <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n            -S\n            <jats:sub>2<\/jats:sub>\n            ) at 375\u2013360\u2005Ma, its peak dated by metamorphic zircon rims in migmatite at 365\u2009\u00b1\u20093\u2005Ma. Basin closure occurred after the intrusion of S-type granites (357\u2009\u00b1\u20092\u2005Ma; zircon\n            <jats:inline-formula>\n              <mml:math xmlns:mml=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML\" overflow=\"scroll\">\n                <mml:mi>\u03b4<\/mml:mi>\n              <\/mml:math>\n            <\/jats:inline-formula>\n            <jats:sup>18<\/jats:sup>\n            O 7.4\u201310.4\u2030) in the foreland and the accretion of gabbros, cumulate gabbros and trondhjemites at the proto-Pacific margin.
