The conditions necessary involve extensive shearing allowing fluids to percolate the rock, and increased heat flow from associated basic magmas. A belt of complexes formed in this way can be traced across the N E and Central Highlands of Scotland, and includes the Pannanich Hill Complex. Though the reconstitution of the complexes was probably diachronous along the belt, they all formed during the later part of the Caledonian Orogeny.
