Twelve samples from the type section at Dunans, Staffin Bay, Skye yielded palynofloras rich in miospores with subordinate proportions of marine microplankton. All the samples produced low diversity dinoflagellate cyst florules which include\n            <jats:italic>Meiourogonyaulax caytonensis, M. planoseptata, Mendicodinium groenlandicum<\/jats:italic>\n            and\n            <jats:italic>Rhynchodiniopsis cladophora<\/jats:italic>\n            and thus indicate an early Callovian age. The Upper Ostrea Member represents, therefore, the oldest Callovian strata in Scotland and is coeval with the Fleet Member of England. The Staffin Bay Formation, with marine macrofauna and microplankton, overlies the regressive Skudiburgh Formation (Great Estuarine Group) and this boundary has been deemed to be a genetic sequence boundary.
