The papers in this volume discuss a wide variety of such stones, including stones from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. Igneous (basalt, porphyry and a variety of granites), sedimentary (sandstone, limestone) and metamorphic (marble, quartzite, gneiss, slate, soapstone) stones are featured. These stones have been used over long periods of time for a wide range of uses, including monuments, buildings of architectural note, columns, roofing, tiling and lithography. A number of papers in this book provide information that is essential for eventual approval of stones as a Global Heritage Stone Resource or a group of stones as a Global Heritage Stone Province.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1144\/sp486-2020-84","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,6,25]],"date-time":"2020-06-25T09:34:30Z","timestamp":1593077670000},"page":"1-6","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1144\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Worldwide examples of global heritage stones: an introduction"],"prefix":"10.1144","volume":"486","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3209-8068","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Joseph T.","family":"Hannibal","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Cleveland Museum of Natural History, 1 Wade Oval Drive, Cleveland, OH 44106-1767, USA"}]},{"given":"S.","family":"Kramar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute, Dimi\u010deva ulica 12, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4745-431X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"B.
