Our approach, which we call\n Poisson matting<\/jats:italic>\n , has the following advantages. First, the matte is directly reconstructed from a continuous matte gradient field by solving Poisson equations using boundary information from a user-supplied trimap. Second, by interactively manipulating the matte gradient field using a number of filtering tools, the user can further improve Poisson matting results locally until he or she is satisfied. The modified local result is seamlessly integrated into the final result. Experiments on many complex natural images demonstrate that Poisson matting can generate good matting results that are not possible using existing matting techniques.\n <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1015706.1015721","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2004,10,7]],"date-time":"2004-10-07T17:38:56Z","timestamp":1097170736000},"page":"315-321","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":354,"title":["Poisson matting"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"23","author":[{"given":"Jian","family":"Sun","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Microsoft Research Asia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jiaya","family":"Jia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hong Kong University of Science and Technology"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Chi-Keung","family":"Tang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Hong Kong University of Science and Technology"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Heung-Yeung","family":"Shum","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Microsoft Research Asia"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","first-page":"134","article-title":"Comprehensive method for removing from an image the background surrounding a selected object","volume":"6","author":"BERMAN A.","year":"2000","unstructured":"BERMAN, A., VLAHOS, P., AND DADOURIAN, A. 2000.
