In fact, it\u2019s natural to strive in any endeavor not to break something further in the course of repair. In software engineering, as in medicine, doing no harm starts with a deep understanding of the tools and techniques available. Using this theme and some medical metaphors, I offer some observations on the practice of software engineering. Whatever we do, first, do no harm. After all, we do not want critics 100 years from now ridiculing practices that we now believe to be legitimate, especially if the only reason we adopt them is faith and not deep understanding.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1016978.1016991","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,1,26]],"date-time":"2005-01-26T16:33:14Z","timestamp":1106757194000},"page":"14-18","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["First, Do No Harm: A Hippocratic Oath for Software Developers?"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Phillip A","family":"Laplante","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Penn State University"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,6]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"Code Complete: A Practical Handbook of Software Construction","author":"McConnell S.","year":"1993","unstructured":"1 .
