Most work in this area has concentrated on the ability of single factors (e.g. gender, math background, etc.) to predict success, with the exception of Wilson et al. (2001), which used a general linear model to gauge the effect of combined factors. In Rountree et al. (2002) we presented the results of a survey of our introductory programming class that considered factors (such as student expectations of success, among other things) in isolation. In this paper, we reassess the data from that survey by using a decision tree classifier to identify combinations of factors that interact to predict success or failure more strongly than single, isolated factors.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1041624.1041669","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,1,26]],"date-time":"2005-01-26T11:49:14Z","timestamp":1106740154000},"page":"101-104","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":62,"title":["Interacting factors that predict success and failure in a CS1 course"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"36","author":[{"given":"Nathan","family":"Rountree","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Janet","family":"Rountree","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Anthony","family":"Robins","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Robert","family":"Hannah","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/952978.801037"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/08886504.1994.10782096"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/03098770120108266"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","volume-title":"Classification and Regression Trees","author":"Breiman L.","year":"1984","unstructured":"Breiman, L., Friedman, J.,, Olshen, R., and Stone, C., (1984), Classification and Regression Trees, Wadsworth International Group."},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/322917.323110"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/800162.805173"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","volume-title":"Characteristics of Students who Failed (or Succeeded) the Introductory CS Course, work in progress in Proceedings of the 33rd ASEE\/IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference","author":"Gal-Ezer J.","year":"2003","unstructured":"Gal-Ezer, J., Vliner, T., and Zur, E., (2003), Characteristics of Students who Failed (or Succeeded) the Introductory CS Course, work in progress in Proceedings of the 33rd ASEE\/IEEE Frontiers in Education Conference."},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/355354.355369"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_9_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/953051.801357"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_10_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/800186.810630"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_11_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/820127.820182"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_12_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/971300.971351"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_13_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/971300.971387"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_14_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/5600.5701"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_15_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/364447.364581"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_16_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/800184.810494"}],"container-title":["ACM SIGCSE Bulletin"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1041624.1041669","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/1041624.1041669","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,2]],"date-time":"2026-06-02T22:20:38Z","timestamp":1780438838000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1041624.1041669"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,28]]},"references-count":16,"journal-issue":{"issue":"4","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2004,12,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/1041624.1041669"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/1041624.1041669","relation":{"is-identical-to":[{"id-type":"doi","id":"10.1145\/1044550.1041669","asserted-by":"subject"}]},"ISSN":["0097-8418"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0097-8418","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,28]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2004-06-28","order":3,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
