These properties include: canonical meaning representations for stored patterns; prototypes as representations of classes of stored patterns; pattern matching processes that must evaluate fully all stored patterns that partially match a target pattern; and pattern matching processes that are influenced by pattern complexity and limited processing capacity. This characterization of human pattern processing is critically evaluated in light of recent psychological studies. The implications of these results for the design of artificial knowledge systems are discussed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1045343.1045379","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,17]],"date-time":"2007-01-17T18:32:02Z","timestamp":1169058722000},"page":"71-71","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Implications of human pattern processing for the design of artificial knowledge systems"],"prefix":"10.1145","author":[{"given":"Barbara","family":"Hayes-Roth","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"The Rand Corporation, Santa Monica, CA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1977,6]]},"container-title":["ACM SIGART Bulletin"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1045343.1045379","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/1045343.1045379","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T22:43:31Z","timestamp":1750286611000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1045343.1045379"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1977,6]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"63","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1977,6]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/1045343.1045379"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/1045343.1045379","relation":{},"ISSN":["0163-5719"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0163-5719"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1977,6]]},"assertion":[{"value":"1977-06-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
