We characterize and model this collection at two levels. First, we present a macroscopic characterization of topic propagation through our corpus, formalizing the notion of long-running \"chatter\" topics consisting recursively of \"spike\" topics generated by outside world events, or more rarely, by resonances within the community. Second, we present a microscopic characterization of propagation from individual to individual, drawing on the theory of infectious diseases to model the flow. We propose, validate, and employ an algorithm to induce the underlying propagation network from a sequence of posts, and report on the results.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1046456.1046462","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,17]],"date-time":"2007-01-17T18:32:02Z","timestamp":1169058722000},"page":"43-52","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":102,"title":["Information diffusion through blogspace"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"D.","family":"Gruhl","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Research, Almaden"}]},{"given":"David","family":"Liben-Nowell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Laboratory for Computer Science"}]},{"given":"R.","family":"Guha","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Research, Almaden"}]},{"given":"A.","family":"Tomkins","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Research, Almaden"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,12]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5555\/645480.655281"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1038\/35019019"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5555\/515595"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","volume-title":"The Mathematical Theory of Infectious Diseases and its Applications","author":"Bailey Norman","year":"1975","unstructured":"Norman Bailey .
