This is partly due to the pervasive nature of available\nInternet technologies such as search engines and booking agents. It\nis within this context that the importance of investigating various\ncharacteristics demonstrated by mobile agent computing is becoming\napparent. In order to perform specialized tasks on behalf of their\nowners, a certain amount of intelligence in mobile agents is often\nassumed or expected. The attribute intelligent brings with it a\nconcomitant human characteristic that is assigned to an inanimate\ntechnological object. In mobile agent systems, communities of\nagents (some with embedded intelligence, and some without) already\ninhabit areas of cyberspace and interact with other agents, human\nusers and hosts. Depending on the expected interaction with other\nentities, it is plausible to think that such a community can\nexhibit a social life of its own. This raises issues concerning\ninformation security as well as the ethical and social behaviour of\nmobile agents. In this paper we discuss a framework for dealing\nwith the security and ethical design issues of this technology.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1050305.1050310","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,15]],"date-time":"2005-11-15T15:54:55Z","timestamp":1132070095000},"page":"3","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Design Issues in Ethical Agent Computing"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"34","author":[{"given":"L.","family":"Pretorius","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing - University of South Africa"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"A.","family":"Barnard","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing - University of South Africa"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"E.","family":"Cloete","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing - University of South Africa"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,30]]},"container-title":["ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1050305.1050310","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/ft_gateway.cfm?id=1050310&ftid=302663&dwn=1","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T17:43:27Z","timestamp":1750268607000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1050305.1050310"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,30]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,30]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/1050305.1050310"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/1050305.1050310","relation":{},"ISSN":["0095-2737"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0095-2737"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2004,6,30]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2004-06-30","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
