Because problemsolving systems have similar knowledge requirements, we are studying the relation between language comprehension on one hand, and problem-solving systems, including much of what goes under the heading of \"knowledge engineering\", on the other. The current focus of our research therefore is a system that can function in several areas. Some of these will be typical of the language comprehension literature (\"stories\" about stereotypic situations) while others will involve problem-solving (the blocks world, geometry, and inventory control).
