The paper begins by briefly describing past anthropological and sociological culture research. This research will inform our current exploration into the issues surrounding culture and its role in Global Software Development efforts. It then clarifies why this research is particularly important. The paper continues with a description of the current phase of this research, which is an exploratory qualitative approach rooted in Grounded Theory, and of the next phase, which will be a more quantitative approach looking at specific \"problem areas\" that were identified during the first phase.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1082983.1083116","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,7]],"date-time":"2005-11-07T19:28:32Z","timestamp":1131391712000},"page":"1-5","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":11,"title":["Cultural patterns in software process mishaps"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"30","author":[{"given":"Eve","family":"MacGregor","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yvonne","family":"Hsieh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Philippe","family":"Kruchten","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,5,16]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"3rd International Workshop on Global Software Development, Collocated with ICSE","year":"2004","author":"Kruchten P.","key":"e_1_2_1_1_1"},{"volume-title":"Variations in Value Orientations","year":"1961","author":"Kluckhohn F.","key":"e_1_2_1_2_1"},{"volume-title":"Culture's consequences","year":"1980","author":"Hofstede G.","key":"e_1_2_1_3_1"},{"volume-title":"Culture and organizations--Software of the mind: McGraw-Hill","year":"1997","author":"Hofstede G.","key":"e_1_2_1_4_1"},{"volume-title":"Beyond culture","year":"1976","author":"Hall E.
