Although these systems are usually mission-critical (the customers often being financial institutions), a visual tool that could be used for end-user programming, called the Process Modeler, proved important for marketing the WFE and the component suite in general. The promise of end-user programming (EUP), however, never materialized. This article sketches the evolution of the WFE. It de-scribes why the EUP capabilities were required, why they were never really used in practice, and how to reconcile these two facts.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1082983.1083238","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2005,11,7]],"date-time":"2005-11-07T19:28:32Z","timestamp":1131391712000},"page":"1-4","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Market forces and end-user programming for mission-critical systems"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"30","author":[{"given":"Lutz","family":"Prechelt","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin, Berlin, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Daniel J.","family":"Hutzel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"abaXX Technology AG, Stuttgart"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2005,5,21]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"abaXX.components Workflow Engine User Guide V4.0","author":"XX","year":"2004","unstructured":"aba XX Technology AG , abaXX.components Workflow Engine User Guide V4.0 , Stuttgart , 2004 . abaXX Technology AG, abaXX.components Workflow Engine User Guide V4.0, Stuttgart, 2004."},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"abaXX.components WebApp Framework User Guide V4.0","author":"XX","year":"2004","unstructured":"aba XX Technology AG , abaXX.components WebApp Framework User Guide V4.0 , Stuttgart , 2004 . abaXX Technology AG, abaXX.components WebApp Framework User Guide V4.0, Stuttgart, 2004."},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","volume-title":"Business Process Modeling Language BPML VI.0 Specification, www.bpmi.org","author":"Management Initiative Business Process","year":"2002","unstructured":"Business Process Management Initiative , Business Process Modeling Language BPML VI.0 Specification, www.bpmi.org , 2002 .
