This note relates my progress towards solving the problem using REDUCE: at present the programs involved are not as tidy as those displayed (for instance) in the MACSYMA or SCRATCHPAD solutions (2, 3), and the computing times still leave scope for improvement. The results are nevertheless there, and the extensions to REDUCE that I have made in the process of obtaining them give a clear demonstration of the amount of mechanism called into play by 'modern' algebra such as factorization. The solution of problem 7 splits naturally into three parts. The first of these calculates a pair of modest polynomials P and Q.
