My comments are based on my experience using MACSYMA [6] for the past seven years. I am also somewhat familiar with REDUCE [3] and the new program, SMP [1]. Some of my comments come from difficulties I have encountered in using MACSYMA and teaching others to use MACSYMA. However, my basic interest is in making symbol manipulation programs know more mathematics than they now know.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1089302.1089305","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,17]],"date-time":"2007-01-17T18:32:02Z","timestamp":1169058722000},"page":"11-15","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Mathematics and symbol manipulation"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"16","author":[{"given":"Stanly","family":"Steinberg","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1982,8]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"SMP Handbook, Caltech.","year":"1981","author":"Cole C.","key":"e_1_2_1_1_1"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of the 1977 MACSYMA User's Conference.
