After reviewing the motivations leading to the use of information technology in vehicles, we investigate the networking requirements of the necessary communication system based on IP (Internet Protocol). Existing work that could meet these requirements is highlighted together with some existing projects. We also briefly introduce some research and deployment issues that will have to be considered.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1129582.1129595","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2006,5,8]],"date-time":"2006-05-08T22:51:53Z","timestamp":1147128713000},"page":"49-52","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":37,"title":["The information technology era of the vehicular industry"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"36","author":[{"given":"Thierry","family":"Ernst","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Keio University, Japan"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2006,4,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"CALM - Medium and Long Range High Speed Air Interfaces parameters and protocols for broadcast point to point vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to point communication in the ITS sector - Networking Protocol - Complementary element.
