To be effective, serious games must incorporate sound cognitive, learning, and pedagogical principles into their design and structure. In this paper, we review cognitive principles that can be applied to improve the training effectiveness in serious games and we describe a process we used to design improvements for an existing game-based training application in the domain of cyber security education.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1281320.1281322","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,11,30]],"date-time":"2007-11-30T14:24:58Z","timestamp":1196432698000},"page":"2","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":143,"title":["Cognitive science implications for enhancing training effectiveness in a serious gaming context"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"7","author":[{"given":"Frank L.","family":"Greitzer","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Olga Anna","family":"Kuchar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Kristy","family":"Huston","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2007,11]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"Allen M. 2002.
