Empirical evidence derived from human subject experiments indicates an inverse relationship between a peripherally degraded scene's high-resolution inset size and mean search time, a trend consistent with existing image-based and model-based techniques. In addition, the data suggest that maintaining a target's silhouette edges decreases search times when compared to targets with degraded edges. However, analysis suggests a point of diminishing returns with an inset larger than 15\u00b0 when target discrimination is a component of visual search. Benefits of the hybrid technique include simplicity of design and parallelizability, both conducive to GPU implementation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1462048.1462053","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,2,4]],"date-time":"2009-02-04T13:01:58Z","timestamp":1233752518000},"page":"1-21","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Hybrid image\/model-based gaze-contingent rendering"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"5","author":[{"given":"Hunter A.","family":"Murphy","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Clemson University, Clemson, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Andrew T.","family":"Duchowski","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Clemson University, Clemson, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Richard A.","family":"Tyrrell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Clemson University, Clemson, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,2,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Bahill A.
