We conducted four studies that investigated the navigation design issues related to a product that uses full-screen input\/output panels. In the initial release of the product, the I\/O panels were mapped to program function (PF) keys which allowed users to navigate from panel to panel in a network organization with one keystroke. When the product added more function and the number of panels exceeded the number of PF keys, navigation had to be arranged in a hierarchy if PF keys were still to be used. As the product evolved, we prototyped and empirically studied new methods of navigation. Navigating commands and a selection menu were studied, in addition to PF keys.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/15683.1044099","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2007,1,17]],"date-time":"2007-01-17T18:32:02Z","timestamp":1169058722000},"page":"68-69","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["NAVIGATION ISSUES RELATED TO MENU-BASED SOFTWARE PRODUCTS"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"18","author":[{"given":"Barbara S.","family":"Isa","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Human _Factors Center"}]},{"given":"William C.","family":"Ogden","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Human _Factors Center"}]},{"given":"Susan J.","family":"Wolfe","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Human _Factors Center"}]},{"given":"Roni","family":"Korenshtein","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IBM Human _Factors Center"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[1986,10]]},"container-title":["ACM SIGCHI Bulletin"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/15683.1044099","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/15683.1044099","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T13:38:49Z","timestamp":1750253929000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/15683.1044099"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1986,10]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2","published-print":{"date-parts":[[1986,10]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/15683.1044099"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/15683.1044099","relation":{},"ISSN":["0736-6906"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0736-6906"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[1986,10]]},"assertion":[{"value":"1986-10-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
