Today almost every size and class of computer system, from the smallest sensors and handheld devices to the \"big iron\" servers in data centers, offers a myriad of features for reducing, metering, and capping power consumption. Without these features, fan noise would dominate the office ambience, and untethered laptops would remain usable for only a few short hours (and then only if one could handle the heat), while data-center power and cooling costs and capacity would become unmanageable.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/1698223.1698225","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,1,12]],"date-time":"2010-01-12T20:23:07Z","timestamp":1263327787000},"page":"10-17","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["Power-Efficient Software"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"Eric","family":"Saxe","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Sun Microsystems"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,1]]},"container-title":["Queue"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1698223.1698225","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/1698223.1698225","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,18]],"date-time":"2025-06-18T20:22:58Z","timestamp":1750278178000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/1698223.1698225"}},"subtitle":["Power-manageable hardware can help save energy, but what can software developers do to address the problem?"],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2010,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2010,1]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/1698223.1698225"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/1698223.1698225","relation":{},"ISSN":["1542-7730","1542-7749"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1542-7730"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1542-7749"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2010,1]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2010-01-01","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
