Our mathematical ancestors used the numbers 12, 60, and 360 to organize time and angular measure. This article describes a method of examining number bases at a glance for possible incorporation in information-age ideas. The number-theoretical relationships of digits to number bases serve as a guide toward selection of numbers for such uses.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2077808.2077809","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2012,10,15]],"date-time":"2012-10-15T19:22:23Z","timestamp":1350328943000},"page":"4-12","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Exploring number bases as tools"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Michael Thomas","family":"De Vlieger","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Vinci LLC, Saint Louis, Missouri"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"69","volume-title":"The Mathematical Brain","author":"Butterworth Brian","year":"2000","unstructured":"Butterworth , Brian ( 2000 ) The Mathematical Brain , Macmillan Publishers Ltd ., London, pages 69 -- 70 .
