This study aims to establish an analytical framework for polygon-based land use change to understand the land use change process considering types of land use and the shape. Polygon event and polygon state help to grasp the continuity spatially and temporally. Polygon event represents the combination of both changes in type of land use and the shape through the change process. Polygon state reflects homogeneity during the change process. Compactness, which recognizes geometrical characteristics of a polygon, was used to enhance understanding of the change process. A case study in Tsukuba City, Japan was tested to demonstrate the feasibility of the presented approach. The proposed framework supports the clarification of land use change pattern and is effective in explaining the spatio-temporal land use change process.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2078296.2078300","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2011,12,20]],"date-time":"2011-12-20T17:49:14Z","timestamp":1324403354000},"page":"15-20","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Analytical framework for polygon-based land use change"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Chiaki","family":"Mizutani","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Tsukuba, Tennoudai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yuji","family":"Murayama","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Tsukuba, Tennoudai, Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2011,11]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1538-4632.2008.00715.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1068\/b2752"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/PL00011471"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/13658810600894265"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10109-007-0044-2"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1365-2699.2009.02100.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_7_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1080\/13658810802492462"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Langran G. 1992.
