Given the ubiquitous nature of smartphones, people-centric sensing is a viable and efficient solution for crowdsourcing data. In this work, we propose a fully distributed, opportunistic sensing framework that involves two main components which both work in an ad hoc fashion: Recruitment and Data Collection. We analyzed the feasibility of our distributed approach for both components through preliminary simulations. The results show that our recruitment method is able to select 66% of the nodes that are appropriate for the sensing activity and 88% of the messages sent by these selected nodes reach the sink by using our data collection method.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2436196.2436219","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,2,12]],"date-time":"2013-02-12T14:15:12Z","timestamp":1360678512000},"page":"50-53","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":18,"title":["Autonomous and distributed recruitment and data collection framework for opportunistic sensing"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"16","author":[{"given":"G\u00fcliz Seray","family":"Tuncay","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}]},{"given":"Giacomo","family":"Benincasa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}]},{"given":"Ahmed","family":"Helmy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,2,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1411759.1411763"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/978-3-642-12654-3_9"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","volume-title":"Recruitment Framework for Participatory Sensing Data Collections.
