In particular, we explore the potential of using predicates that make explicit the hidden relation that holds between the nouns that form the noun compound. For example,\n            <jats:italic>mosquito that carries malaria<\/jats:italic>\n            is a paraphrase of the compound\n            <jats:italic>malaria mosquito<\/jats:italic>\n            in which the verb explicitly states the semantic relation between the two nouns. We study the utility of using such paraphrasing verbs, with associated weights, to build a representation of the semantics of a noun compound, for example,\n            <jats:italic>malaria mosquito<\/jats:italic>\n            can be represented as follows:\n            <jats:italic>carry<\/jats:italic>\n            (23),\n            <jats:italic>spread<\/jats:italic>\n            (16),\n            <jats:italic>cause<\/jats:italic>\n            (12),\n            <jats:italic>transmit<\/jats:italic>\n            (9), and so on.
