We provided a semester-long course, composed of lessons about empirical and experimental methods. It also included a collaborative project concerning a systematic mapping study of the challenges in the adoption of open source software in a business context. All students collaborated on the project by analyzing emerging results in the scientific literature. They evaluated the proposals in terms of level of novelty and evidence and delivered a complete report, which summarized the risk factors in the adoption of open source software and offers technical knowledge about evolutionary patterns and development community support, with practical implications. As a side effect, this problem-based learning approach provides a positive impact in terms of students' participation, teamwork attitude, professional interest in open source software, and exam passing.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2532780.2532803","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,11,27]],"date-time":"2013-11-27T14:13:59Z","timestamp":1385561639000},"page":"1-4","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["Teaching evidence-based software engineering"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"38","author":[{"given":"Daniela","family":"Castelluccia","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bari, Bari, Italy"}]},{"given":"Giuseppe","family":"Visaggio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bari, Bari, Italy"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,11,11]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/S0950-5849(02)00049-6"},{"volume-title":"Basili, V.
