Driving intervention in individuals with ASD is a growing area of study, but it is still widely under-researched. We present the development and preliminary assessment of a gaze-contingent adaptive virtual reality driving simulator that uses real-time gaze information to adapt the driving environment with the aim of providing a more individualized method of driving intervention. We conducted a small pilot study of 20 adolescents with ASD using our system: 10 with the adaptive gaze-contingent version of the system and 10 in a purely performance-based version. Preliminary results suggest that the novel intervention system may be beneficial in teaching driving skills to individuals with ASD.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2892636","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,18]],"date-time":"2016-03-18T09:50:44Z","timestamp":1458294644000},"page":"1-23","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":67,"title":["A Gaze-Contingent Adaptive Virtual Reality Driving Environment for Intervention in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Joshua","family":"Wade","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Lian","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Dayi","family":"Bian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jing","family":"Fan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Amy","family":"Swanson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Kennedy Center, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Amy","family":"Weitlauf","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Kennedy Center, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Medha","family":"Sarkar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Computer Science, Middle Tennessee State University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zachary","family":"Warren","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Pediatrics and Psychiatry, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Nilanjan","family":"Sarkar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vanderbilt University, TN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,3,17]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"Schoenfeld","author":"Alqahtani Hanadi H.","year":"2014","unstructured":"Hanadi H.
