We seek to understand how technologies are used and negotiated among family members and the influence of technology on commensality. We conducted an observational study of six families. The findings showed how technologies are integrated into the mealtime activities. Our study identifies domestic circumstances where background technologies are raised to the foreground, visible devices are hidden, unwanted distractions become desired, and ordinary technologies are integrated into mealtime experiences. We identify four patterns of arrangement between technologies and family members during mealtimes, and we discuss how technologies contribute to mealtime satiety and commensality. Finally, we present implications of our findings and directions for technological advancements focusing on the social and celebratory nature of family mealtimes.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/2994146","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,12,5]],"date-time":"2016-12-05T16:47:16Z","timestamp":1480956436000},"page":"1-26","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":41,"title":["Commensality and the Social Use of Technology during Family Mealtime"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"23","author":[{"given":"Hasan Shahid","family":"Ferdous","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5063-9783","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Bernd","family":"Ploderer","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Queensland University of Technology and University of Melbourne"}]},{"given":"Hilary","family":"Davis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"La Trobe University and University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3727-9204","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Frank","family":"Vetere","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Melbourne, Parkville, Australia"}]},{"given":"Kenton","family":"O'hara","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,12,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5555\/1671011.1671045"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2317956.2317964"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1592440.1592444"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","volume-title":"Sociology on the Menu: An Invitation to the Study of Food and Society","author":"Beardsworth Alan","unstructured":"Alan Beardsworth and Teresa Keil . 2002.
