Recent success in developing proof-of-principle QPUs has prompted the question of how to integrate these emerging processors into modern high-performance computing (HPC) systems. We examine how QPUs can be integrated into current and future HPC system architectures by accounting for functional and physical design requirements. We identify two integration pathways that are differentiated by infrastructure constraints on the QPU and the use cases expected for the HPC system. This includes a tight integration that assumes infrastructure bottlenecks can be overcome as well as a loose integration that assumes they cannot. We find that the performance of both approaches is likely to depend on the quantum interconnect that serves to entangle multiple QPUs. We also identify several challenges in assessing QPU performance for HPC, and we consider new metrics that capture the interplay between system architecture and the quantum parallelism underlying computational performance.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3007651","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,3,20]],"date-time":"2017-03-20T08:29:43Z","timestamp":1489998583000},"page":"1-13","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":59,"title":["High-Performance Computing with Quantum Processing Units"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"Keith A.","family":"Britt","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN"}]},{"given":"Travis S.","family":"Humble","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Oak Ridge National Laboratory and University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge, TN"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,3,17]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","volume-title":"Lukas Svec, Oana Catu, Amlan Chakrabati, Chen-Fu Chiang, Seth Vanderwilt, John Black, Fred Chong, Margaret Martonosi, Martin Suchara andKen Brown, Massoud Pedram, and Todd Brun.","author":"Abhari Ali Javadi","year":"2012","unstructured":"Ali Javadi Abhari, Arvin Faruque, Mohammad Javad Dousti, Lukas Svec, Oana Catu, Amlan Chakrabati, Chen-Fu Chiang, Seth Vanderwilt, John Black, Fred Chong, Margaret Martonosi, Martin Suchara andKen Brown, Massoud Pedram, and Todd Brun. 2012.
