This research seeks to answer 2 questions: 1) How well does the ?portfolio? concept describe the collection of technologies that individuals routinely use?, and 2) How do individuals manage technology portfolios over time? To answer these questions, data was gathered data using a multi-method qualitative design from technically-adept participants. Each participant had assembled a collection of technologies. We compared their technology selection and usage against five characteristics of a financial portfolio (purposeful, diverse, dynamic, balanced and holistic) and found many similarities and some differences. Using inductive analysis, a technology portfolio lifecycle containing five processes (Scan, Research, Trial, Use, and Retire) was developed. The paper concludes with a call to researchers to further develop the technology portfolio concept and to vendors and organizations to consider the ways that technologies are researched, trialed and integrated into a portfolio to increase chances for successful change.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3051473.3051478","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,2,16]],"date-time":"2017-02-16T20:59:48Z","timestamp":1487278788000},"page":"75-92","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Technology Portfolios"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"48","author":[{"given":"Jennie","family":"Carroll","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Blaize Horner","family":"Reich","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC, Canada"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,2,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/isre.9.2.204"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1057\/ejis.2011.8"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/2393807"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.2307\/249669"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","unstructured":"Carroll J.
