Via a head- and eye-tracking VR headset, our method detects saccadic suppression and redirects the users during the resulting temporary blindness. Our dynamic path planning runs in real-time on a GPU, and thus can avoid static and dynamic obstacles, including walls, furniture, and other VR users sharing the same physical space. To further enhance saccadic redirection, we propose subtle gaze direction methods tailored for VR perception.<\/jats:p>\n
We demonstrate that saccades can significantly increase the rotation gains during redirection without introducing visual distortions or simulator sickness. This allows our method to apply to large open virtual spaces and small physical environments for room-scale VR. We evaluate our system via numerical simulations and real user studies.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3197517.3201294","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,7,31]],"date-time":"2018-07-31T15:56:23Z","timestamp":1533052583000},"page":"1-13","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":185,"title":["Towards virtual reality infinite walking"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"37","author":[{"given":"Qi","family":"Sun","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Stony Brook University, NVIDIA, and Adobe Research"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Anjul","family":"Patney","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"NVIDIA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Li-Yi","family":"Wei","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Adobe Research"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Omer","family":"Shapira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"NVIDIA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jingwan","family":"Lu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Adobe Research"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Paul","family":"Asente","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Adobe Research"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Suwen","family":"Zhu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stony Brook University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Morgan","family":"Mcguire","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"NVIDIA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"David","family":"Luebke","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"NVIDIA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Arie","family":"Kaufman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Stony Brook University"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,7,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3127589"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3758\/s13428-016-0738-9"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3072959.3073642"},{"key":"e_1_2_2_4_1","volume-title":"Physical Space Requirements for Redirected Walking: How Size and Shape Affect Performance.
