The directionality and loudness of these sounds as they propagate in complex 3D scenes vary with listener location, providing cues that distinguish indoors from outdoors and reveal portals and occluders. We show that ambient sources can be approximated using an ideal notion of spatio-temporal incoherence and develop a lightweight technique to capture their global propagation effects. Our approach precomputes a single FDTD simulation using a sustained source signal whose phase is randomized over frequency and source extent. It then extracts a spherical harmonic encoding of the resulting steady-state distribution of power over direction and position in the scene using an efficient flux density formulation. The resulting parameter fields are smooth and compressible, requiring only a few MB of memory per extended source. We also present a fast binaural rendering technique that exploits phase incoherence to reduce filtering cost.\n <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3272127.3275100","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,11,28]],"date-time":"2018-11-28T19:16:10Z","timestamp":1543432570000},"page":"1-10","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["Ambient sound propagation"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"37","author":[{"given":"Zechen","family":"Zhang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Cornell University"}]},{"given":"Nikunj","family":"Raghuvanshi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Microsoft Research"}]},{"given":"John","family":"Snyder","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Microsoft Research"}]},{"given":"Steve","family":"Marschner","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Cornell University"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,12,4]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","volume-title":"2001 IEEE Workshop on the.
