We use objective mobile sensing data from phones, wearables and beacons to study workplace performance and offer new insights into behavioral patterns that distinguish higher and lower performers when considering roles in companies (i.e., supervisors and non-supervisors) and different types of companies (i.e., high tech and consultancy). We present initial results from an ongoing year-long study of N=554 information workers collected over a period ranging from 2-8.5 months. We train a gradient boosting classifier that can classify workers as higher or lower performers with AUROC of 0.83. Our work opens the way to new forms of passive objective assessment and feedback to workers to potentially provide week by week or quarter by quarter guidance in the workplace.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3328908","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,6,24]],"date-time":"2019-06-24T13:45:01Z","timestamp":1561383901000},"page":"1-24","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":73,"title":["Differentiating Higher and Lower Job Performers in the Workplace Using Mobile Sensing"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"3","author":[{"given":"Shayan","family":"Mirjafari","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Kizito","family":"Masaba","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Ted","family":"Grover","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California at Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA"}]},{"given":"Weichen","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Pino","family":"Audia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Andrew T.","family":"Campbell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Nitesh V.","family":"Chawla","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Vedant Das","family":"Swain","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}]},{"given":"Munmun De","family":"Choudhury","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, Atlanta, GA"}]},{"given":"Anind K.","family":"Dey","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA"}]},{"given":"Sidney K.","family":"D'Mello","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder, CO, USA"}]},{"given":"Ge","family":"Gao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California at Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA"}]},{"given":"Julie M.","family":"Gregg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Colorado at Boulder, Boulder, CO, USA"}]},{"given":"Krithika","family":"Jagannath","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California at Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA"}]},{"given":"Kaifeng","family":"Jiang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA"}]},{"given":"Suwen","family":"Lin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Qiang","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA"}]},{"given":"Gloria","family":"Mark","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California at Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA"}]},{"given":"Gonzalo J.","family":"Martinez","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Stephen M.","family":"Mattingly","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Edward","family":"Moskal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Raghu","family":"Mulukutla","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA"}]},{"given":"Subigya","family":"Nepal","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Kari","family":"Nies","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of California at Irvine, Irvine, CA, USA"}]},{"given":"Manikanta D.","family":"Reddy","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}]},{"given":"Pablo","family":"Robles-Granda","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Koustuv","family":"Saha","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA"}]},{"given":"Anusha","family":"Sirigiri","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA"}]},{"given":"Aaron","family":"Striegel","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,6,21]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.5539\/ibr.v8n4p210"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","unstructured":"Khaled Alsabti Sanjay Ranka and Vineet Singh. 1997.
