Unlike the traditional classroom context where one pedagogical style can have a tendency to predominate, a makerspace possesses the potential to provide multi-sensory engagement for students that anticipates and accommodates their needs, whilst providing real time feedback on reactions to hypothetical scenarios as they occur to allow a student to adapt their responses accordingly. By taking charge of their learning in a makerspace, the taught material is imbued with greater significance, enabling students to grasp how theoretical concepts can be applied in the practical domain; an essential prerequisite for a variety of professions, such as medicine, where simulated, real world scenarios facilitate the development of practical competence for conducting invasive procedures, without endangering patients to do so.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3329488.3331179","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,10,22]],"date-time":"2019-10-22T13:09:01Z","timestamp":1571749741000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Makerspaces in Higher Education: An overview"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"2019","author":[{"given":"Brian","family":"Meyer","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Rocky Vista University"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,7,31]]},"container-title":["eLearn"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3329488.3331179","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"http:\/\/dl.acm.org\/ft_gateway.cfm?id=3331179&ftid=2077595&dwn=1","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,17]],"date-time":"2025-06-17T23:54:18Z","timestamp":1750204458000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3329488.3331179"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2019,5]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"5","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2019,5]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/3329488.3331179"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/3329488.3331179","relation":{},"ISSN":["1535-394X"],"issn-type":[{"type":"electronic","value":"1535-394X"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2019,5]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2019-07-31","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}],"article-number":"3329488.3331179"}}
