We describe a discrete version of these special surface parameterizations and show that they are very useful for specific applications, most of which are related to the design and fabrication of surfaces in architecture. With the new discrete surface model, it is easy to control strip widths between neighboring geodesics. This facilitates tasks such as cladding a surface with strips of originally straight flat material or designing geodesic gridshells and timber rib shells. It is also possible to model nearly developable surfaces. These are characterized by geodesic strips with almost constant strip widths and are used for generating shapes that can be manufactured from materials which allow for some stretching or shrinking like felt, leather, or thin wooden boards. Most importantly, we show how to constrain the strip width parameters to model a class of intrinsically symmetric surfaces. These surfaces are isometric to surfaces of revolution and can be covered with doubly-curved panels that are produced with only a few molds when working with flexible materials like metal sheets.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3355089.3356541","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,11,8]],"date-time":"2019-11-08T20:27:58Z","timestamp":1573244878000},"page":"1-13","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":31,"title":["Discrete geodesic parallel coordinates"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"38","author":[{"given":"Hui","family":"Wang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Dalian University of Technology and TU Wien"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Davide","family":"Pellis","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"TU Wien"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Florian","family":"Rist","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"KAUST and TU Wien"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Helmut","family":"Pottmann","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"KAUST and TU Wien"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Christian","family":"M\u00fcller","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"TU Wien"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2019,11,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1467-8659.2010.01779.x"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Digital wood design.
