Yet at the same time, analysing the ethical implications of AI for disabled people solely through the lens of a singular idea of \"fairness\" risks reinforcing existing power dynamics, either through reinforcing the position of existing medical gatekeepers, or promoting tools and techniques that benefit otherwise-privileged disabled people while harming those who are rendered outliers in multiple ways. In this paper we present two case studies from within computer vision - a subdiscipline of AI focused on training algorithms that can \"see\" - of technologies putatively intended to help disabled people but, through failures to consider structural injustices in their design, are likely to result in harms not addressed by a \"fairness\" framing of ethics. Drawing on disability studies and critical data science, we call on researchers into AI ethics and disability to move beyond simplistic notions of fairness, and towards notions of justice.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3386296.3386301","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,3,2]],"date-time":"2020-03-02T20:51:31Z","timestamp":1583182291000},"page":"1-1","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":75,"title":["What is the point of fairness?"],"prefix":"10.1145","author":[{"given":"Cynthia L.","family":"Bennett","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Human Centered Design & Engineering, University of Washington"}]},{"given":"Os","family":"Keyes","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Human Centered Design & Engineering, University of Washington"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,3,2]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1086\/233897"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2049536.2049596"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.28968\/cftt.v5i1.29612"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1007\/s10803-008-0611-5"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3132525.3134823"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","volume-title":"Jennifer Ruth Fosket, and Jennifer R.
