Further the workshop's goals were to illuminate the problem in a variety of contexts, evaluate proposed solutions, discuss approaches to move towards gender equality, and to develop a community to support meaningful change in gender equality in software engineering. In its second year, the workshop featured a keynote from ACM-W president Jodi Tims, ten papers, two posters on work-in-progress, and a fivemember panel. Jodi Tims presented principles and best practices of work to improve the gender balance. Paper topics focused on gender in computer science in a variety of domains, including in education, parenting, and industry, and on creating inclusive environments, including in open source. The panel discussed particularly difficult challenges-including the potential bias of data that is used by artificial intelligence to make decisions-and how aggressive institutions can be to make meaningful change. Thirty-eight people from seventeen countries participated in the workshop, and even more people were reached via Twitter.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3402127.3402138","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,9]],"date-time":"2020-07-09T22:13:10Z","timestamp":1594332790000},"page":"25-27","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Summary of the 2nd Workshop on Gender Equality in Software Engineering (GE 2019)"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"45","author":[{"given":"Ivica","family":"Crnkovic","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Karina","family":"Kohl Silveira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Sara","family":"Sprenkle","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Washington and Lee University, VA, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,9]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"GE '19: Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Gender Equality in Software Engineering","year":"2019","key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","unstructured":"GE@ICSE , in GE '19: Proceedings of the 2nd International Workshop on Gender Equality in Software Engineering , Montreal, Quebec, Canada , 2019 .
