Literally, overnight, courses that were taught face-to-face were moved online, and face-to-face instructors of those courses became online educators. Now, several months into the pandemic, it has become clear that instructors at colleges and universities today must be able to teach both online and face-to-face, and they must be able to move from one medium to the other as circumstances dictate. However, that is not easy to do, as learning to teach online takes time, and involves a good deal of effort. Several years ago, we conducted a research study on how university faculty members learned to teach online. What we learned in that research may be helpful to instructors learning to teach online today.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3429274.3425110","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,22]],"date-time":"2020-10-22T23:40:05Z","timestamp":1603410005000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["How Instructors Learn to Teach Online: Considering the past to plan for the future"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"2020","author":[{"given":"Steven","family":"Schmidt","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"East Carolina University"}]},{"given":"Elizabeth M.","family":"Hodge","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"East Carolina University"}]},{"given":"Christina M.","family":"Tschida","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Appalachian State University"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,22]]},"container-title":["eLearn"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3429274.3425110","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,17]],"date-time":"2025-06-17T22:02:33Z","timestamp":1750197753000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3429274.3425110"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,9]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"10","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,9]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/3429274.3425110"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/3429274.3425110","relation":{},"ISSN":["1535-394X"],"issn-type":[{"type":"electronic","value":"1535-394X"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2020,10,9]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2020-10-22","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}],"article-number":"3429274.3425110"}}
