This work presents a novel fatality metric, the\n COVID-19 burden<\/jats:italic>\n , which normalises SARS-CoV2 fatalities with respect to historical mortality rates over the same period of time. We argue that this measure provides an improved basis for comparing fatality rates between countries, and we present an analysis of this measure across 174 countries, using data up to November 15, 2020, to better understand the impact of the virus in different countries and regions.\n <\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3436997","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,26]],"date-time":"2020-11-26T18:15:56Z","timestamp":1606414556000},"page":"1-8","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Estimating the Fatality Burden of SARS-CoV2"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Barry","family":"Smyth","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Insight Centre for Data Analytics, School of Computer Science, University College Dublin, Belfield, Ireland"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,17]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"587","DOI":"10.1016\/S0140-6736(20)31689-5","article-title":"COVID-19 spread in the UK: The end of the beginning","volume":"396","author":"Anderson Roy M.","year":"2020","unstructured":"Roy M.
