As caches and social network timelines are intrinsically always busy, i.e., their space-shared resources are always utilized, the goal of this paper is to evaluate the implications of a simple albeit unexplored observation: caches and timelines operate under heavy traffic. First, we introduce the control problem of caches and timelines under heavy traffic. Then, we derive properties of the asymptotically optimal (AO) policy. In particular, we indicate that there is an AO control that threatens content diversity, as it involves maintaining contents from up to two classes in the system, leading to the so called filter bubbles.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3439602.3439612","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,26]],"date-time":"2020-11-26T18:45:02Z","timestamp":1606416302000},"page":"24-26","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Caches and Timelines Operate Under Heavy Traffic"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"48","author":[{"given":"Daniel S.","family":"Menasch\u00e9","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Federal University of Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, Brazil"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mark","family":"Shifrin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Ben-Gurion University, Negev, Israel"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Eduardo","family":"Hargreaves","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Petrobras, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,25]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","first-page":"2","article-title":"An asymptotic optimality result for the multiclass queue with finite buffers in heavy traffic","volume":"4","author":"Atar R.","year":"2015","journal-title":"Stochastic Systems"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1023\/A:1019160803783"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3308897.3308928"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1287\/moor.8.3.439"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3397166.3409121"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_6_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3308897.3308913"},{"volume-title":"Proceedings of YEQT [arXiv:1503","year":"2015","author":"Shifrin M.","key":"e_1_2_1_7_1"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_8_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1109\/INFCOM.2007.186"}],"container-title":["ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3439602.3439612","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1145\/3439602.3439612","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,17]],"date-time":"2025-06-17T22:03:08Z","timestamp":1750197788000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3439602.3439612"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,23]]},"references-count":8,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,23]]}},"alternative-id":["10.1145\/3439602.3439612"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/3439602.3439612","relation":{},"ISSN":["0163-5999"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0163-5999"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2020,11,23]]},"assertion":[{"value":"2020-11-25","order":2,"name":"published","label":"Published","group":{"name":"publication_history","label":"Publication History"}}]}}
