In practice, there are many situations when development focused on efficiency, creates a system that is not very resilient. Fortunately, some technology companies have prioritized stability and availability over efficiency in order to deliver to customers a more consistent experience. Governments also value resilience to reliably serve their communities in the face of crises like cyber hacking and COVID-19. System resilience is a topic often neglected in computer science curricula. This paper reports on a recent virtual ACM SPLASH-E Education Symposium panel session held in November 2020 that discussed resilience, efficiency, and the impact of COVID-19 on computer science education. The panel featured Steven Fraser (panel impresario) and panelists Rebecca Mercuri, Landon Noll, Ales Plsek, and Moshe Vardi.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3448992.3448998","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,31]],"date-time":"2021-03-31T04:05:53Z","timestamp":1617163553000},"page":"25-27","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Engineering for Chaos"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"46","author":[{"given":"Steven","family":"Fraser","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Innoxec, Santa Clara, CA, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Dennis","family":"Mancl","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"MSWX Software Experts, Bridgewater, NJ, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,3,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3388890"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"ACM TechTalk Webinar","author":"Vardi M.","year":"2020"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_3_1","first-page":"2020","article-title":"Efficiency Is Not the Only Economic Virtue","volume":"10","author":"Galston W.","year":"2020","journal-title":"Wall Street Journal"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_4_1","first-page":"2020","volume":"17","author":"Terlep R.G.","year":"2020","journal-title":"Wall Street Journal"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_5_1","unstructured":"What Covid-19 toilet paper shortages tell us about supply chains.
