In a user study (N=8), we evaluate the recognition performance of various sign language gestures at both the word and sentence levels. Given 42 frequently used individual words and 30 meaningful sentences, SonicASL can achieve an accuracy of 93.8% and 90.6% for word-level and sentence-level recognition, respectively. The proposed system is tested in two real-world scenarios: indoor (apartment, office, and corridor) and outdoor (sidewalk) environments with pedestrians walking nearby. The results show that our system can provide users with an effective gesture recognition tool with high reliability against environmental factors such as ambient noises and nearby pedestrians.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3463519","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,6,24]],"date-time":"2021-06-24T16:29:19Z","timestamp":1624552159000},"page":"1-30","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":40,"title":["SonicASL"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"5","author":[{"given":"Yincheng","family":"Jin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Buffalo, NY, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yang","family":"Gao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yanjun","family":"Zhu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Wei","family":"Wang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jiyang","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Seokmin","family":"Choi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zhangyu","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Electrical Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jagmohan","family":"Chauhan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Southampton, Department of Electronics and Computer Science, Southampton, UK"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Anind K.","family":"Dey","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Washington, Information School, Seattle, Washington, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zhanpeng","family":"Jin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University at Buffalo, State University of New York, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,6,24]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/3341163.3347747"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML'16)","author":"Amodei Dario","year":"2016","unstructured":"Dario Amodei , Sundaram Ananthanarayanan , Rishita Anubhai , Jingliang Bai , Eric Battenberg , Carl Case , Jared Casper , Bryan Catanzaro , Qiang Cheng , Guoliang Chen , 2016 .
