We provide an in-depth analysis of unsupervised topic models from their inception to today. We trace the origins of different types of contemporary topic models, beginning in the 1990s, and we compare their proposed algorithms, as well as their different evaluation approaches. Throughout, we also describe settings in which topic models have worked well and areas where new research is needed, setting the stage for the next generation of topic models.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3507900","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,1,12]],"date-time":"2022-01-12T15:49:51Z","timestamp":1642002591000},"page":"1-35","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":201,"title":["The Evolution of Topic Modeling"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"54","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4798-1582","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rob","family":"Churchill","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgetown University"}]},{"given":"Lisa","family":"Singh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Georgetown University"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,10]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_3_2_2_2","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/1718487.1718499"},{"key":"e_1_3_2_3_2","unstructured":"Felipe Almeida and Geraldo Xex\u00e9o. 2019.
