Yet, there has been relatively little exploration of the potential societal implications of such an infrastructure. In semi-structured interviews with 23 participants from India, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and the United States, we discussed attitudes and preferences regarding the deployment of apps that support contact tracing to contain the spread of COVID-19. Through interpretive analysis, we examined the relationship between persistent discomfort and vulnerability when using such apps. Such an examination yielded three temporal forms of vulnerability: real, anticipatory, and speculative. By identifying and defining the temporalities of vulnerability through an analysis of people's pandemic-related thoughts and experiences, we develop the overlapping discourses of humanistic infrastructure studies and infrastructural speculation. In doing so, we explore the concept of vulnerability itself and present implications for the study of vulnerability in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and for the oversight of app-based public health surveillance.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3555586","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,11]],"date-time":"2022-11-11T22:59:06Z","timestamp":1668207546000},"page":"1-27","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":8,"title":["Speculative Vulnerability"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"John S.","family":"Seberger","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA, USA"}]},{"given":"Ike","family":"Obi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Mariem","family":"Loukil","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Mediterranean Institute of Technology, Tunis, Tunisia"}]},{"given":"William","family":"Liao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Indiana University Bloomington, Bloomington, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"David J.","family":"Wild","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Indiana Universiy Bloomington, Bloomington, IN, USA"}]},{"given":"Sameer","family":"Patil","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, USA"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,11]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_1_1_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1145\/2901790.2901873"},{"key":"e_1_2_1_2_1","volume-title":"Privacy and Human Behavior in the Age of Information.
