Based on in-depth needs analysis facilitated through autism centers in China, we designed and developed MagicBLOCKS, a series of tabletop AR interactive games for children with autism. We conducted a four-week field study with 15 male children. We found that the interactive dynamics in games were rewarding and played critical roles in motivation and sustained interest. In addition, based on post-hoc interviews and video analysis with expert therapists, we found that MagicBLOCKS provided opportunities for children with autism to engage with each other through player performances and audience interactions with episodes of cooperation and territoriality. We discuss the limitations and the insights offered by this research.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1145\/3567716","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,14]],"date-time":"2022-11-14T21:31:51Z","timestamp":1668461511000},"page":"161-184","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1145\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Players and Performance: Opportunities for Social Interaction with Augmented Tabletop Games at Centres for Children with Autism"],"prefix":"10.1145","volume":"6","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9795-3171","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Qin","family":"Wu","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand \/ Chengdu University of Information Technology, Chengdu, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9234-7401","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rao","family":"Xu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chengdu University of Information Technology, Chengdu, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7155-5199","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yuantong","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Chengdu University of Information Technology, Chengdu, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5541-4425","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Danielle","family":"Lottridge","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7441-5493","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Suranga","family":"Nanayakkara","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"National University of Singapore, Singapore, Singapore \/ University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand"}]}],"member":"320","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,11,14]]},"reference":[{"key":"e_1_2_2_1_1","unstructured":"Fouzia Khursheed Ahmad. 2015.
